Letters-2: Educating India

... it has been decades since the focus of education in this country shifted to MARKS. In the process, the system failed to educate children in other areas, such as sensitising them to their societal responsibilities, teaching them to coexist in a multi-cultural environment and creating global citizens. It is important that those of us who are 'educated' work in a coordinated fashion to overhaul our education system and redefine the very concept of education. If we don't do this, our society will continue to be full of people who are literate, not educated; a corrupt, selfish bunch that cares only about enriching itself. As Mahatma Gandhi once said, we must each be the change we wish to see - Sushmita Mukherjee, Delhi.

Excerpt from Mail Bag, The Times of India, Chennai, April 29, 2010.

Grateful thanks to Ms Sushmita Mukherjee and The Times of India.
